Betula papyrifera ( Canoe, Paper Birch ) |
This tree is native to most of the northern part of North America. While it is similar to the Betula pendula (European White Birch), it is more resistant to the borer and leaf miners that can plague the pendula. Also, the papyrifera grows to a height of 50-90 feet and half as wide, larger than the pendula. With a less weeping growth habit and appearing more open, the leaves are about 4 inches long. The outstanding creamy white bark peels off in papery layers, hence, the common name, Paper Birch, seems very suitable. Autumn foliage gives brilliant yellow color. |
